Conference at UvA on UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: Water, Food and Climate

28 May 2018

On 25 and 26 June international scholars, policy makers, business and civil society actors will come together in Amsterdam and discuss three UN Development Goals: fresh water (SDG 6), food (SDG 2) and climate (SDG13). What is the potential of these goals for mobilizing the world to more equitable and environmentally sustainable futures?

In 2015 the United Nations adopted a set of development goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Seventeen goals were announced that seek to realize the human rights of all and specifically to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The goals balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental. The goals and targets stimulate action over the next fifteen years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.

Conference aim and organisers

The conference will be organized by the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS) of the University of Amsterdam and is its second conference to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals.

The second conference, ‘Critical Perspectives on Governance by Sustainable Development Goals: Water, Food and Climate’ will pay attention to crucial governance and institutional factors facilitating and/or hampering sustainable development, especially peace and partnership. Rectors of four Dutch education institutes will open the conference with a lively debate on the role of scholarship in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. On each day, in addition to the morning and afternoon plenary sessions, two rounds of between five to eight parallel sessions will take place.

The conference is organised in close collaboration with UNESCO-IHE, the Amsterdam Business School, Kennisactieprogramma Water and the VU Science for Sustainability Program.
