Geographies of Globalizations (GoG)

Geographies of Globalizations was founded after the research assessment 2000-2006 and started officially on January 2009 as a merger of the former research groups Space and Economy and Territories, Identities and Representations. The merger of the relatively small groups was partly born out of a pragmatic concern about the viability of smaller groups, but it is to bring the research on patterns and processes of globalization to a higher level in a shared intellectual node. Bringing different approaches - cultural, economic, and political - to globalization together in one group is innovative and challenging. By building on the accumulated strengths of the constituting groups, Geographies of Globalizations can become a significant player in debates on processes of globalization.
Until January 2010, the Geographies of Globalization Group has been lodged within the Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt); a larger research institute focused strongly on the spatial dimensions of social reality. The relationship between socio-economic, cultural and political processes on the one hand and spatial and environmental contexts at different levels of aggregation on the other has been, therefore, at the core of AMIDSt research activities. The different research traditions of human geography, planning and international development studies were closely linked in AMIDSt. This spirit and commitment continues within the cross-cutting research of the Geographies of Globalizations group. In a reorganizing Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, the Geographies of Globalizations group retains close relationship to the wider Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, but is also key research node with extensive links both to other research groups in the Faculty, at other Dutch and European Universities and in Asia and the Americas.
