Susanne van den Buuse studied Psychology at the UvA with Social Psychology and Sport Psychology as her master. She graduated in 2007. In 2013 Susanne van den Buuse obtained a position as a PhD Candidate in the Long-term Care and Dementia Partnership, which was founded by the Sociology and Anthropology Department and is a collaboration between the UvA, Windesheim University and elderly care providers. Its aim is to study elderly care and in particular dementia  from a social science perspective and to encourage exchange of knowledge between academia and practice in order to improve the quality of long-term elderly care.

Susanne van den Buuse's research focuses on the effects of the reforms in the Dutch health care system on institutional elderly care, which include a larger responsibility for elderly and their social network. An increasing appeal is being made to elderly people to be self-reliant (“zelfredzaam”) and in control (“eigen regie”) over their life and care arrangements, as it is assumed this will decrease costs and improve eldery people's quality of life. She conducted her study in a Dutch nursing home to investigate how these two concepts were applied in the daily care practice. She includes the perspectives of the management, care workers, residents and their informal caregivers but focuses on the care workers. Susanne will finish her PhD research in April 2017.
