  • Profile

I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. Prior to beginning this PhD I completed a PhD in Philosophy from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. In this philosophy PhD I examined the possibility for novelty to arise without an event through the lens of French post-structural philosophy and critical or general complexity.

My   current thesis is interested in state craft in South Africa today. I am currently looking at this from two angles. The first is the production of certain types of subjectivity and subjectification made possible by the different articulations of the TB and HIV programs. Secondly, I am interested in the relations between policing and health care. In doing this I use an event in which protesters were injured by the police and treated in public health clinics for these injuries. In both cases, my interest is in the making visible of certain forms of suffering and subjectivity whilst others are rendered invisible according to a certain type of aesthetics.

My current interests include the (in)visibilities of political subjects, the notion of the "subject" and the "state," and the possibilities for emancipatory discourse under conditions of neo- or   late-liberalism.
