Social sciences usually see the market and gifts as two different systems of exchange, but Olav Velthuis argues that these two systems are interwoven. Recognising this can help us better understand sectors such as the digital economy, where companies such as Facebook and Google offer seemingly free services, but consumers do in fact pay in the form of access to personal data.
