Public-sector vaccine production in the Netherlands

Mediacl Anthropology

29Mar2017 12:00 - 13:00

PhD defence ceremony

Since the 1950s, global health has improved remarkably through the introduction of a multitude of vaccines in childhood vaccination programmes. Nowadays, in the Western world, the manufacture and supply of new vaccines and combination vaccines have become the domain of only a handful of multinational companies. Jan Hendriks studies public sector vaccine development and manufacturing in Netherlands, and specifically in the Royal Institute for Public Health in Bilthoven. He describes its history and initial successes from the 1960s onwards, followed by a period of institutional transformations and gradual decline, culminating in a partial takeover by the private sector in 2012.
