PhD Course Ethnographic Methods

This course is for PhD students who use ethnographic methods, including participant observation and open interviews, to engage in detailed case studies.

This advanced course is for PhD students with previous experience in using ethnographic methods (including participant observation, open interviews, and ethnographically analyzing other relevant materials). It will concentrate on issues that arise in everyday research and challenge you to take a next step in your development as a researcher. As a participant you are addressed as an agent of your own learning process and encouraged to explore methods with an eye on your own PhD project. The teaching is hands on and includes micro-ethnographies that we will discuss jointly. The course is taught by Annemarie Mol.

You can register for the course by sending an email to: aissr@uva.nl. The course is equal to 12 ECTS.

Please note that you are expected to attend all sessions in this course and make all the assignments. We begin with everyone presenting their own project to all the others, so as to foster collaborative learning. It is therefore not possible to miss the first session.
