The Academy has selected nineteen new members, amongst which professor of cultural sociology Giselinde Kuipers.
Members of the KNAW, leading scientists from all disciplines, are chosen on the basis of their scientific achievements. The KNAW has around 550 members. A membership is for life. The new Academy members will be installed on Monday 16 September.
Giselinde Kuipers is professor of cultural sociology at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Giselinde Kuipers received her PhD in sociology (with distinction) from the University of Amsterdam.
In 2006, she published Good Humor, Bad Taste: A Sociology of the Joke, comparing Dutch and American humor styles.
Giselinde Kuipers also worked on a new 5-year research project called “Towards a comparative sociology of beauty: The transnational modeling industry and the social shaping of beauty standards in six European countries”.
In 2014, Giselinde Kuipers founded the Cultural Sociology program group within the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research. Moreover, from 2015 -2018, Giselinde was the Chair of the Sociology Department.
