Javier Garcia-Bernardo completed his PhD with the title “offshore finance and corporate tax avoidance” in the CORPNET group of the University of Amsterdam. Before that, he did his MSc in Computer Science at the University of Vermont, specializing in Complex Systems.
Javier's research uses methods from network science and machine learning to understand offshore finance and corporate tax avoidance. This includes understanding how firms organize across countries, how they use offshore financial centers in their corporate structure, the effect of this in effective tax rates, and the consequences of tax avoidance in terms of wealth inequality and corporate and state power. His research is supported by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement number 638946).
