  • Profile

Lea Klarenbeek is a doctoral researcher in political theory at the University of Amsterdam. Her research focuses on the conceptualization and measurement of integration in the context of international migration.

Lea holds a master in Political Theory from the London School of Economics and Political Science, from which she graduated in 2013. After her master, she gained experience in academic teaching at the University of Amsterdam, by teaching courses at the undergraduate level in both Sociology and Political Science (for the latter, students have elected her teacher of the year in 2015).

During her PhD research, Lea has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and a Cultuurfonds Young Talent Award, to pay a 4-month research visit to professor Richard Alba at the Graduate Center, City University New York.

    Conceptualizing and Operationalizing Relational Integration

Trained as a political theorist, I focus on the conceptualization of ‘integration’ in current migration research. The main claim of my dissertation is that integration is often wrongfully conceptualised and measured as an individual achievement. I have developed a theoretical framework of relational integration as an epistemic and methodological alternative to conventional integration research, both on the level of conceptualization and operationalization.
