Nineteen researchers who recently obtained their doctorates have been awarded a Veni grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Each researcher will receive up to 250,000 euros, which they can use to conduct research for a period of three years at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) or the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC-UvA).

This year, a total of 939 researchers applied for a Veni grant from the NWO. The applications were reviewed by scientists from the Netherlands and abroad and 147 requests were ultimately approved.

More understanding and better policy through science

The Veni recipients of 2012 represent many different scientific disciplines. Much of the research is directly related to current social issues. Researchers are examining wide-ranging topics, such as:

  • which regulatory measures can help credit rating agencies perform better;
  • the role of genes and the environment in people with obesity;
  • how to improve the power of super-fast quantum computers;
  • how the bond between teacher and pupil plays a role in predicting the risk of school dropout.

UvA and AMC grant recipients

The UvA and AMC grant recipients are: Matthijs Baas (Psychology), Chantal Bax (Philosophy), Joost Berkhout (Political Science), Keren Borensztajn (Medicine), Matthijs Brouwer (Neurology), Peter van Dam (History), Michiel van Elk (Psychology), Michal Heller (Physics), Onno Holleboom (Vascular Medicine), Riekelt Houtkooper (Medicine), Artemy Kalinovsky (History), Joana Mendes (Law), Thijs Pols (Medical Biochemistry), Erica van der Sijpt (Anthropology), Joost van Spanje (Political Communication), Maayke Stomp (Aquatic Microbiology), Roland van der Veen (Mathematics), Alex van Venrooij (Cultural Sociology) and Neil Walton (Mathematics).

About the Veni Grant

The Veni grant is one of three funding channels of the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (Vernieuwingsimpuls). The other two consist of the Vidi grant (for experienced postdocs) and the Vici grant (for highly experienced researchers). The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme was established in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the various universities. The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme allows The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to provide talented researchers the means they need to conduct innovative and groundbreaking research.
