On 13 June, Saskia Wieringa, Honorary Emeritus Professor Women’s Same-sex Relations Crossculturally, will give her valedictory lecture, at 16:30 in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam. Prior to this farewell lecture, a special seminar will take place earlier that day.

The seminar will be held in honour of Professor Saskia Wieringa’s decades of work on gender and sexuality in Indonesia, and will focus on two of her central research themes:

  1. The rights of lesbian, bisexual, and trans (LBT) persons in Indonesia
  2. The Indonesian 1965–66 genocide and its ongoing denial

This morning session will feature a keynote by trans scholar Dr Zowie Davy, followed by the presentation of Saskia’s forthcoming book The Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans Movement (Bloomsbury, 2024), with responses from Prof. Dr Rachel Spronk and Prof. Dr Sarah Bracke.

In the afternoon, Dr Ayu Wahyuningrum will address the ethics and urgency of documenting trauma testimonies from genocide victims, with a focus on Indonesian contexts.
