After five years of ethnographic and collaborative work, the ERC-funded project Worlds of Lithium comes to a close with a two-day conference in Amsterdam.
Event details of Worlds of Lithium: After Replacements / Transforming Transitions
Start date
12 June 2025
End date
13 June 2025

Led by Dr. Cristóbal Bonelli (University of Amsterdam), the project has explored how lithium-based transitions are reconfiguring territories across Chile, China, and Norway — not only in terms of energy, but through shifting ecologies, disrupted rhythms, and fractured political imaginaries.

Rather than tracing a linear supply chain, Worlds of Lithium has followed how lithium takes and makes place: from extractive zones in northern Chile to experimental labs in Norway and the electrified mobilities of China.

Keynote speakers

  • Gabrielle Hecht – Stanford University
  • Andrew Barry – University College London
  • Mario Blaser – Memorial University

Roundtable at SPUI25

The programme also features a public roundtable at SPUI25:
🎤 Bipolar Transitions: Situated Worlds, Uneven Futures (12 June, 20:00)
This event brings together perspectives on how transitions unfold through unstable humors — manic, melancholic — and how they reorganize matter, space, and experience.
