About Thijs’ research

Thijs Bol investigates inequality in education, on the labor market and in science. He also teaches on inequality and research methods.

Agenda for the Young Academy

Bol is actively involved in public debates. His research into Matthew effects in Dutch science financing, for example, received a great deal of attention in national and international media. This study showed that researchers who just won a large grant will receive much more science funding than comparable researchers who just missed the grant. He concludes that there are major self-reinforcing effects in Dutch science funding: success leads to success, which makes the early career a crucial period.

At the Young Academy, Thijs Bol wants to further build on the question: how can we finance science in the Netherlands - thereby promoting the development of fairer policies.

About the Young Academy

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences set up the Young Academy in 2005. It is a platform for researchers from various disciplines who have proven themselves in their profession. It organizes activities in the field of interdisciplinarity, science policy and science and society. Membership lasts five years.
