In the realm of health and care, issues of equity are closely linked to mobility, connectivity and interdependence. Viruses and pollution are unaware of geopolitical boundaries; many resources and technologies flow more freely, while biopolitical borders prevent human migration, hindering access to healthier lives.
Health, Care and the Body

Developments that benefit health in one place may adversely affect it in another, while the distribution of health and illness is tied to local and global inequalities, often requiring us to rethink our concepts of health, care and the body.

We explore these mobilities, flows and closures within interconnected health, food and medical landscapes at local, regional and global levels. We study the diffusion of medical knowledge and technologies against the background of unequal access to quality care and experiences of inequity; how extant systems governing mobility benefit wealthier regions at the expense of poorer ones; and topics beyond those traditionally studied in health research such as how the extraction of natural and human resources generates new movements of people and materials. We draw on global and planetary health, science and technology studies, material semiotics, and medical anthropology as we explore theoretical and conceptual connections with diverse strands of thought to expand the analysis required to understand our vulnerable planet.

Understanding interconnected dynamics is necessary to tackle wicked problems in global and planetary health amidst increasingly strained public finances and geopolitical turmoil. The aim is to better understand inequities in order to more effectively address them.
