  • Profile

I did my doctoral studies under the aegis of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. Based on fieldwork in the megalopolis of Shenzhen, my research explored the interconnections of class, ethnicity, and place of origin in the construction of a collective identity among internal migrant workers. It not only questioned the premises of working-class formation, but also delved deep into how precarious Chinese migrant workers discriminate and exclude each other.

I also hold a master’s degree from Peking University (PRC) and a BA from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile). I have worked as lecturer and researcher in different Chilean universities. My areas of expertise include the anthropology of China, internal labour migration, interethnic relations, socialism and neo-socialism, and intercultural communication between China and Latin America.

I am also a photo-documentalist and host of the Spanish-language podcast about East Asia, ‘Todo Bajo el Cielo’.
