Welcome!
I am a social research methodologist specialising in qualitative research methods, mixed methods, and collaborative interpretation. My research focuses on interviewing behaviour, qualitative data analysis, and participatory research, often integrating digital tools like ATLAS.ti and Panel.
I currently serve as Programme Director of the Research Master in Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and as an Adjunct Professor at Universitas Hasanuddin (Indonesia). Teaching and mentoring students has always been central to my work, and I was honoured to be named Lecturer of the Year at the University of Amsterdam (2011).
Research & Teaching
My PhD (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2010) explored the role of probing tactics in open interviews, using a large-scale experiment to analyse their effects on data quality. This research laid the foundation for my ongoing work on interviewing, qualitative analysis, and methodological reflexivity.
In my teaching, I focus on making qualitative research accessible and rigorous. I developed a Coursera MOOC on Qualitative Research Methods, which has reached over 100,000 students worldwide. At UvA, I teach and coordinate courses in qualitative methods, mixed methods, and social research methodology at the BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.
Current Projects & Public Engagement
Beyond academia, I co-founded Panel, a tool designed for collaborative interpretation and citizen participation in research and decision-making. I am also an active member of ESA RN20 (Qualitative Methods) and KWALON, where I contribute to discussions on the future of qualitative research.
I regularly engage in public lectures, workshops, and consulting projects. In 2014, I was invited to give five public lectures at the Universiteit van Nederland, making research methodology accessible to a broader audience.
