For centuries, indigenous people have lived sustainably while resisting invaders on South Africa’s Wild Coast. These communities recently succeeded in halting oil & gas exploration, winning ongoing protection for their ocean and culture. This powerful documentary about a David and Goliath court-case struggle against Shell celebrates the amaMpondo’s heroic indigenous resistance, based on the amaMpondo’s culture, their legal defence, and an inspiring, spiritual connection to their lands, seas, and ancestors.

Following the screening of Wild Coast Warriors, Sinegugu Zukulu will be taking the stage for a Q&A session from the audience moderated by UvA's researcher Matteo Fermeglia. Reception will follow. Participation is free and no registration is required.

About the speaker

Sinegugu Zukulu, a member of amaMpondo Indigenous people in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, is a very proud Mpondo man, a storyteller, social and environmental activist. He holds a Master of Philosophy in Environmental Management degree, done through Stellenbosch University. He has more than two decades of activism advocating for human and environmental rights in rural South Africa. He is a 2024 recipient of Goldman Environmental Prize and few other national and international environmental awards.
