AMCIS grants 2025
20 January 2025
The AMCIS Board invites scholars affiliated with the AISSR to submit proposals for activities in 2025. “Activities” are events organised by the applicant(s). Such activities may include but are not limited to:
• a workshop or conference
• a masterclass or (methodological) training
• an excursion
• a societal outreach activity
• a lecture
Criteria for eligibility are:
• Thematical fit within AMCIS
• Involvement of at least one scholar affiliated with the AISSR in the organization of the activity.
• Minimum 500, maximum 3000 euros from AMCIS budget per proposal.
Organising teams may include people from other institutes and faculties, other universities, or non-academic organisations. Activities may be open to selected participants only, or to a broader audience. Co-financing by other institutions is encouraged.
Besides the financial support, AMCIS can provide support with:
• booking a room on campus and/or hosting an online webinar
• communication on website and other UvA channels
• making travel arrangements for external guests
We ask grant holders, in return for AMCIS support, to contribute to the AMCIS webpage in a small way as part of their proposed project/activity. This can be in the form of:
The total AMCIS budget for this call is 12.000 euros. Should we receive more proposals than can be funded, the Board will decide which proposals to fund, according to the following selection criteria:
• Appeal of the activity to members of all AISSR departments (sociology, anthropology, GPIO, and political science)
• Diversity in types of activities
• Appeal of the activity to staff at different levels of seniority
• Collaboration with other faculties or organisations
• All are welcome to submit a proposal, but applicants who have not previously received funding take priority
Proposals must be submitted via e-mail to amcis@uva.nl, no later than 21 February. Proposals should include:
- a description of the activity of no more than one page (including purpose and targeted audience)
- a workplan for the organization of the activity, max half a page (i.e. an overview of who does what)
- a budget which specifies the expected costs
- your preference for when the activity should take place (if any)
AMCIS will inform applicants about its decision in March 2025.
AMCIS welcomes proposals for small data grants for all AMCIS scholars. The main goal of the grants is to promote the (inter)disciplinary work of AMCIS scholars in their work on inequality. These grants should be used for data collection, and can take different forms and can cover both qualitative and quantitative projects (such as piloting, expenses for data access, expenses for data collections. Alternatives are also possible, if the main goals and eligibility criteria are met.
AMCIS will award three grants up to max. €2.500 (of course smaller amounts are possible). All grant money has to be spent in 2025. Applicants have until February 21st 2025 (5pm) to submit a proposal via amcis@uva.nl.
Procedure
In principle, all applications that meet the criteria of the call will get funded. If the total applied budget exceeds the maximum budget, we will (a) either propose smaller sums of money for all eligible projects or (b) if this is not possible, perform a lottery, in which preference will be given to Early Career Researchers (PhD Candidates and Postdocs).
A proposal for a seed grant should include:
