'The Atlas of Social Complexity' takes stock of what complexity theory has achieved in the social sciences, and maps possible ways forward into new terrains. In this event, Brian Castellani and Lasse Gerritis, affiliated to IAS, will talk about the central themes of the book.
Event details of Book launch 'The Atlas of Social Complexity'
Date
10 September 2024
Time
15:30 -16:30

'The Atlas of Social Complexity' started with a simple question: what have forty years of complexity theory in the social sciences delivered? Castellani and Gerrits take stock, and then look ahead to ask the more complicated question "what should happen next?" From the dance of bacteria, to human-machine interactions, to the ever-shifting dynamics of power in social networks: the Atlas shows the many new ways in which social complexity may be understood. Realizing that the complexity turn in the social sciences has lost momentum, Castellani and Gerrits call for a new social science imagination in the complexity sciences.

They wrote this book as part of their fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study. For the book, they interviewed many academics, practitioners and artists to understand the many ways in which people attempt to unravel social complexity. During this event, they will talk about the main themes of the book, and will present the first copy to Prof. Huub Dijstelbloem as scientific director of the institute.
