Fleischmann operates at the interface between sociology and social and cross-cultural psychology. She focuses on migration, ethnic inequality and intergroup relations in different countries. Among other things, she studies the differences between migrant communities and destination countries in integration outcomes. She pays particular attention to the role of religion and identity in the involvement and sense of belonging of immigrants in their new country.

As professor at the UvA, Fleischmann’s research will focus on sociology in general and the study of inequalities in relation to work, education and life course in particular, as well as the importance of policies and institutions for stratification processes. The Bachelor's and Master's programmes that she will teach will also focus on subjects such as religion, integration, migration, institutions and inequality.
