Transforming research in and through film

To celebrate the blossoming of Visual Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and the creation of CameraWise – the Amsterdam Hub for Visual Anthropology and the FMG MediaLab, a three-day film festival is being organised under the title CameraWise: Transforming Research in and through Film.

Over the course of three days (15 - 17 April), no more than eight films will be screened, allowing for in-depth discussion.

The films have been selected with current conversations in visual anthropology in mind, enabling more focused debates.

About CameraWise

What becomes of anthropology when it is practiced in and through film? And what becomes of film when it is put to work for anthropology?

CameraWise is a collective of researchers who critically explore what the aesthetic, sensorial and emotive affordances of film can bring to anthropology’s intellectual journeys of discovery.

The work of film is not restricted to ethnographic documentation. The aim is to explore how film can contribute to the conversations known as ‘theory building’. In doing so, a mode of filmmaking is pursued that can shift perspectives, introduce new frames, and question what is taken for granted.

The recently inaugurated FMG Media Lab provides a physical space from which experimentation with filmmaking can take place, alongside the organisation of debates, screenings, courses and seminars.

Although currently composed of anthropologists, CameraWise is open to all researchers in the social sciences who are interested in exploring the possibilities of camera-based research.
